be green! St. Patty’s Day 2011


Saint Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday celebrated internationally on 17 March, named after the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. It originated as a Roman Catholic holiday but it has become more of a secular celebration of Irish culture.

For fun for all ages: Now in its 250th year of celebration, the official St. Patrick's Day Parade begins around 11am at 44th St. and 5th Avenue, passing St. Patrick's Cathedral and the American Irish Historical Society (at 83rd St.) before wrapping up at 86th St. between 4:30 and 5:00pm. According to the parade's website, the best viewing spots for attendees are located towards the northern end of the parade route (above 59th St). "Try sitting on the upper steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art" to get a "great view" of the parade, the website advises
